Beginner Capoeira:

Sequencias de Bimba

Mestre Bimba created a set of prearranged sequences in order to facilitate the learning of Capoeira Regional in his academy. They utilize a simplified form of logical attacks, defense, and movements of counter attack as a training tool. The student is able to learn how to play with confidence and is able to see how moves are properly executed.

Initiated from the ginga, the moves should be executed at a fast pace. Keep in mind that the sequences should be practiced at a slower speed until mastered and moves can be executed without hesitation. Remember to execute each move with proper technique. In the end, strive for continuous movement and quick response.

Here are the first 3 of Bimba’s 8 sequencias in their entirety.

First Sequence
Player One (Plain Pants) Meia Lua de Frente, Meia Lua de Frente, Armada, Aú Player Two (Striped Pants) Cocorinha, Cocorinha, Esquiva, Role

Description: Both players start with ginga. From the right leg in back, player 1 initiates with a meia lua de frente and continues to ginga. Player 2 responds with a cocorinha. With the left leg now back, player 1 kicks another meia lua de frente. He then, instead of placing left foot back to parallel, places drops his foot in front and proceeds with an armada. Player 2 responds with a cocorinha and counter attacks with an esquiva. Player 1 escapes with an Aú.

Second Sequence

Player Two (Striped Pants) Rastera, Rastera, Armada, Negativa, Role

Player 2 responds with a rastera to player 1’s left foot. (note player 2 gets out of the martelo first by moving sideways before applying the rastera) With the left leg now back, player 1 kicks another martelo finishing with the left foot back. Player 2 responds with a rastera to player 1’s right foot. (note player 2 gets out of the martelo first by moving sideways before applying the rastera) He then counter attacks with an armada to the right, finishing in back. Player 1 escapes with a cocorinha and immediately responds with a right foot Benção, finishing in back. Player 2 escapes in a negativa and applies a rastera to player 1’s left foot with his right foot. Player 1 escapes with an Aú.
